Hi, What. I was wondering about disability benefit as well. I heard you have to have less than 100 % hearing with both ears to apply s.s. benefit. My good ear is functional, so I kind of gave up pursuing. I know that you have to have a really good compassionate doctor to back you up. I have not found one. It has been hard being back to work, especially on the phone and on commute. I may have an option of working from home. My boss has been very understanding, so I will stick around a little longer. My coworkers always ask me if I am getting better. I reply I am getting used to it. What kind of work you guys do or have you found one after this incident?

mstctiger......i work in a classroom with 8 kids with autism. you can imagine how loud it is. i am a manager, and i've just asked for my own office to cut down on noise. they have been understanding. meetings are the worst though, worse than the kids. what do you do?
also wanted to ask people if many of you have had sinus infections. i live downtown and have had terrible sinus infections i think because of the smog...also being around kids makes me more suseptible to virus's.

ive had a few sinus infections in the past, a really bad one about a year ago that took a few months to clear up. I also have allergies.
I work in an office on a computer all day ( i work in accounting). My desk is with a few others desks and since my hearing loss i have difficulty figuring out if its my phone ringing or someones elses...and i find it difficult to hear when in larger groups of people.
Im terrified that something horrible is goign to show up on my MRI, im having alot of anxiety about it. I keep having this pressure/pain in my head and scalp area. It last for only a few seconds and then goes away, by the end of the day and focusing on this i have this mild headache...I do have a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders, can this cause headache and pressure.
I normally get headcahes a few times per month and migraines a few times per year. I have even had a few with aura..but not recently.
Im also a little dizzy and off balance every once in a while, this is also making me very nervous.
All of this is not good for someone who has health anxiety to start with....

what an anxious bunch we all are.....got to figure out how better to deal with stress.

As I read the posts here it makes me feel that I have finally found people who understand what I have been going through for the last three months. Some people I have been around seem to think that the answer is just to get a hearing aid...unfortunately for me in my case it would not help. I went to the dr again yesterday and had another hearing test. Although some of the sound is coming back (little) my ability to understand words in my bad ear (right) is not progressing. It has been 3 1/2 months and my ENT has indicated he has seen people get some hearing back after 6 months.
As with many of you, I have a very difficult time being anyplace where there are alot of people or noise. I have found myself retreating from most social situations because I do not feel comfortable...always trying to position myself so that I can hear the conversation with my good ear. For me, home is safe and seems to be where I spend most of my time.

engelchen:
thank you for taking the time to write, it means alot and you have definitly helped me to feel better. The more i think about the MRI the more my symptoms seem to increase, so your are right, they are probably stress related. My MRI is Thursday and they dont have an open MRI at the hospital im going to (unfortunatly)so I guess i will have to survive through it. My doctor gave me clonazepam to take before the test, hopefully that will help.
Im going to find out if they will allow someone to come with me, tks for the suggestions.
Im glad to hear that you were able to succeed in getting some leave from work, anxiety is a serious problem for those who have it and as much as you would love to just turn it off, you just cant and most do not understand that. The worst part of anxiety for me is the time and energy i realize i waste worrying when i should be enjoying my life and experiencing joy.
Thanks again for reaching out.

I'm off to a neurologist
appointment this evening....be interesting to hear what he has to say...

To What? Please keep us posted on what your neurologist says; whether it's different from what mine said (he said 'like a stroke, you need to learn to use the ear again - try wearing an earplug in the good ear instead'). I'd like to know if that was just bunk or not. re: sinus - I don't get sinus infections, but I live on a lake and it's quite humid around here, so that does make you feel sinusy a lot.
Mstctigr - Are they hiring where you work? I could use a few 'understanding bosses' right now. It's been hard to deal with this at work, but I think 'What?' has us all beat. Eight autistic kids would sure be hard to listen to all say at this point.

Tatianna, I really sympathize with you, since I feel exactly the same way, along with everyone else on this forum. I really do feel a little better about all of this everytime I read the posts and I am still surprised that we all don't know each other but are so similar. I have always had problems with anxiety but this particular experience really pushed me over the edge. Anyway, what really helped me was going for accupuncture. To be completely honest it has not made a bit of a difference in my hearing but it has made me calm down alot. I go 2 to 3 times a week and get a massage on my jaw, neck, head and shoulders and while it does hurt while I am there, I seem to feel alot more back to normal after I leave. If you are able to go for accupuncture I really recommend it, to ease your mind if nothing else. I haven't even been back to see my ENT since I haven't gotten the MRI, and to tell you the truth I really don't feel like ever going back because I believe that he is the cause of most of my anxiety. I always leave there a basket case. Well I hope this helps and I will continue to pray for us all to get through this.

Christine, you were blessed to have a kind and patient technicien, i hope i will have the same. I found out that at the hospital im going to they do not allow anyone to come in with you.
TaraJoy, you are right, i agree that the support and reading the other posts on this site has been very helpful, i think i would be a complete basket case had i have not found it.
Im going to try the acupuncture, and a massage.
My ENT is actually super nice, kind and patient with me and my anxiety. He told me that he feels that the MRI will come back negative and that i have more of a chance of getting into a bad car accident then having something really bad show up on my MRI. He sat with me for quite a while trying to reassure me. I dont think he would say those things unless he really believed them, right ?? Im in Canada though and our medical system is quite different.
Tks for all the support, I will let you know how the MRI goes.

Hi Tatianna
I get almost like an earache in my affected ear sometimes. Sometimes it lasts only a few seconds but will come back over a period of time. It seems like it has been happening alot lately at night. It worries me as well. I mentioned it to my ENT and said it could be related to allergies or just pressure on my eardrum.

Hi, all. A few things I found from my own research... TRT is a treatment for Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. To find out more, you can check out Dr. Jastreboff's website. He developed the treatment and it is spread worldwide. He told me it can help Recruitment(hearing loss with hyperacusis). Also the new one called Neoromonics. It was developed in Australia and just landed in US. I had a chance to ask rep about my sensitivity situation. Was told it will increase torelance level by 5 %. Not a big number, but it is something. Not sure if I want to pay USD 5,000 for it, tough. I am going to an orientation at State Dept of Rehabilitation which gives out the info/resorces how to cope better at workplace. For those who use sedatives, plase be cafeful. I was taking ativan and it was making all kinds of weird echoing and vibrations all over my head. I stopped taking it, and all went away. You can check web site for hearing loss help (one word and use org)on ototoxins. I pray every night, for all of us.

Sorry for the duplication there. I must have entered twice. This is for What? So you are a teacher. It must be hard woring with loud(for us now) kids. I remember reading about a teacher's law suit because because they did not accomodate his condition(hyperacusis). He asked for an office work, but school moved him to part time teaching posn. He was on burge of getting laid off. So he sued and won. Canot copy, so if you are interested...

I have uploaded for you a graphic on holographic treatment based on : Korean Finger-Hand Acupuncture. You need not use needles for the application. I use a silver probe for the application of acupressure on the indicated point. For the point acupressure, you may use a ball point pen or even a match-stick for application of the piont. You may feel pain over the holographic point. This is the right point location for the application of acupressure. Vary the pressure of application.
For geriactric patients with partial deafness, I have good feedback.
Mullein Oil ( ear drops )in my experience is good for complicated ear problems.Try to source it and use it. I wish you well.
With regards
Lew

Hey Now--Tatianna, After my MRI, the doctor was on vacation. I hate that! Don't worry! It sounds as if all of our test came back negative. Thats the strange thing. The doctors just don't know. My advice is to get the steriod injections as soon as possible. It did bring back my hearing some. Three months later I felt real dizzy and layed on couch. Later that night I had lost all hearing in that ear again! Steroids didn't work this time. Please eat smart when you are on these steroids. I gained 20 pound very quickly. Be well!!!

Greetings
Apologies. In my hurry to rush off to work, I have not included the regime for the acupressure on the holographic ear point.
Please apply acupressure 3 - 4 times daily , 5 - 10 minutes per session.
