I wonder why nobody is paying attention to this. There is no news at all in Google. I'm sure there is a way that can make the ears hear as others. But nobody is doing that much. For example, there is a phone called iphone by apple. It was really hard to unlock it from AT&T. But people did it within 1 month of it release. If you type 'iphone unlock' in Google there are tones of news coming every hour. But nothing about sudden hearing loss, or cochlear neuritis. I'm sure unlocking iphone is as easy as unlocking ears, but nobody is doing that. Neither doctors nor the governments. Why? It's a pity.

working on health related issues is a little like food chains.

They only work oon what has a high demand. SSNHL and Tinnitus is reall and there is demand for a cure but SSNHL is rare and Tinnitus is more common so there isnt alot of money to be made in finding a cure for it.

Now there is alot of money to be spent on it to get very little results. thats the bad news... if you throw a ton of money at something then you are liable to get some few results but as little money as the throw at this, they wont come up with a cure right away. this will take time unless we get some big people to back it up. As mouch as i'd like to say its about people its more about money.

If they coiuld find a cure for aids they would because it equals billions but finding a cure for SSNHL or Tinnitus would hardly get them a headline. :(

its very sad.

Well, I went to my GP today and had a good talk with him. He believes in tinnitus retraining and will refer me to a tinnitus clinic for retraining therapy. I'm a little worried about the wait list but we shall see.
He also wants me to take ativan 1 mg. qid prn but definately before bed so I will sleep good. Also wants me to see a psychologist to deal with my depression. I have to tell you I have tried the homeopathic route, ginko, niacin, B vits, accutuncture, massage, chinese meds, and others I probably can't remember.
My tinnitus is getting to me and I find I am tense quite often which makes my tinnitus worse. My doc told me that people with chronic conditions often get depressed and I believe that this is what is happening to me so instead of trying to figure out and do everything myself I will listen to him for awhile. Have always been a positive optamistic person in the past so this is a big one!!!!! Maby I'll be happy happy happy and the tinnitus will be so low I won't even hear it!!Ha! HA!!!! Well, this is my thought of the day
See yall.....

To 'anitime' - I'm so sorry you are suffering from depression on top of or due to the SHL. I hate to be a Pollyanna about this, but you do sort of get used to the tinnitis eventually, at least enough to be able to cope with it. It's been over a year for me. Half of my hearing has come back, but the tinnitis is as loud as ever. It's just a bad part of life that - at least right now - can't be changed. Do whatever you need to get a good night's sleep. That will make a huge difference in easing your depression. This is just one part of your life & one part of who you are. Remind yourself to not focus so much on the SHL that you forget the rest. And if it helps a little to know you are not alone in this (or weird)... there are lots of us!

anitime, sorry I can't remember how much hearing you have or if you wear an aid. If not do try one because even if it does not improve your hearing I find that it really masks the tinnitus during the day - it comes back at night of course when I take it out but I try to focus on anything else such as the clock ticking (if I'm not lying on my good ear!), my husband breathing or rain on the roof outside our window is a really good one. Your depression is understandable, I find myself going down that road especially with the prospect of going back to school on Monday after the six week summer holidays.

hi all , I am now 4 months since my SHL. Still trying hard to cope with my tinnitus. I tried hearing aids but doesn't seem it can mask my T. How does your T sound like JeWeL41 ? do u feel noisy in restaurant ? I feel I have some hyperacusis, so not sure amplified sound from hearing aids can help me, i will feel even more noisy. And my T change all the time, tones and volume...it sucks...hope after one year or so I can get used to it , as some other said in here.

God bless everyone

Hi god2007, my tinnitus has changed but not much. I have a high pitched whistle, a whooshing noise (this is the one that seems to change the most) and 'chimes' when I shake my head. It does suck as you say and sometimes it is louder than others but I do believe that the biggest help is to never focus on it and if this means masking it with other sounds or wearing a hearing aid then that it what I do. Night time is worse of course especially if I am a bit grumpy then it seems to get even louder. Recently I have had some bouts of whistling in my good ear, I think if I had it continously in both ears i would find it a lot harder to cope.

JeWeL41 last decade
sorry, forgot to answer your question - I am not troubled by noise unless it is high pitched although I can't pick up conversation in rumbling background noise. My hypercusis and reverberation etc was dreadful when I first had the SSHL in November last year but settled over the following 5 months or so.

JeWeL41 last decade
god2007 - Restaurants are the absolutely worst! There is no way to keep a conversation going with all that background noise. I tried 4 different hearing aids before I gave up on them. They didn't help the tinnitis, and only made the background noise worse. (I could hear everything that went on in the restaurant's kitchen, but nothing at my table.) Your body CAN eventually learn to get used to anything - even tinnitis, it just takes years (and it's hard to wait that long, when we are used to 'taking a pill and expecting an instant cure'.)

Can you, who has had a sudden hearing loss or who has a tinnitus talk on the phone. I mean hear anything when talking on the phone. If yes, how well do you hear. Could you describe it, please. Thanks.

Dear Sir,

I have had SSHL in my right ear, about 60 days ago, I have done My MRI and I have done all tests all were negative my loss happened morning as I woke up and discoverd I couldn't hear on phone, my initial loss was almost 100DB on audiogram. I have went to doctor immediatly 6 hours after onset and was treated with oral corticosteroid treatment and circularity medicine, I have recovered some hearing after 30 days of onset, and it has not improved any after that big imporvment or maybe very little improvment within the 15 days following the improvment, however for the last 2 weeks, my improvment has stopped and even it has decreased a little according to my last audiogram. my audio gram now is about 55db average, with lowest recovery in high feequeincies at about 60 db, lower frequencies about 35 db.

I feel some days I can hear a little better than the others of course very hardly, when tintiues in my ear decreases, then my hearing worsens when my tinitiues go back to normal. I would like to know your view of my situation and if there is anything I can do to help improve my situation. or if you think I might recover more hearing with time and how long to be patient. Now I am 60 days of onset with 55db loss, mostly in high frequencies, do you think I Have a chance recovering my hearing in my right ear soon?

markfxm last decade
60 days is still quite early and you may continue to have some improvement. My case is very similar to yours and after that initial improvement I have had no more.

JeWeL41 last decade
Thanks for answering jewel41, so how long has it been for you? are you still stuck at 55db and are you using any hearing aids? how is your tintiues affecting your hearing. Thank you for your kind answers

Laziz, how much hearing loss you have ? I can hear well on phone in my left ear. I had sudden hearing loss in my left ear , now left with tinnitus and hig freq hearing loss

markfxm,

Maybe you still have some chance to have some more improvement, but actually no one knows how much. How old are you ? it depends on age too. and where u live ? some member here suggest direct steroid shot to the ear to see if any help. Can u find some ENT who can offer this to u to see if it helps?

anyone live in USA know about it ?

Rapper Foxy Brown had sudden hearing loss in both ears in 2005 and went deaf for more than 6 months, and underwent a surgery now have her hearing back..

what kind of surgery was that ?

god2007 last decade
I believe that Foxy Browns hearing loss was due to membrane tears that could be repaired, probably due to loud music? so her case is not the same as most SSHL which is almost never bilateral. Markfxm, my hearing loss averages about 40dB and I wear a hearing aid very successfully.I am 42 slim, fit , healthy, drink almost no alcohol and have never smoked.

Dear God2007, It's not me it's my mother. Here is the story from page 51.
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. I'm from Uzbekistan, Bukhara. My mother had a sudden hearing loss last year on the 21st of October (21.10.2006). When she got up that morning she reolised that she didn't hear anything in her left ear at all, and heard almost nothing in her right ear, even though there had been no any problems with her ear before that. Immediatelly after that we brought her to the hospital, and she was diagnosed with cochlear neuritis. She was treated there for 1 month but that didn't work. After that she has been to Tashkent, Saint Petersburg (Russia), then to Mainz (Germany). But nothing worked. Her ears stayed the same since the beginning. Now I don't know how to recover her. She is 42 (1965). Now, she hears nothing with the left ear. She hears very little with the right one. When I talk to her on the phone she can hear very simple words of mine. But when I talk a bit much she doesn't understand anything. You know it is indeed really bad. Everytime when I remmember that I want to cry. Life doesn't seem to be interesting. Nothing seems to be interesting at all. I know there are some people who have this kind of problem,, who can understand me. Please, if anybody can suggest me how to treat my mother, how to do so that she could hear, e-mail me please. Or leave any messege in this forum. Is there any kind of research going on? Will she be recovered? Please, tell me whatever you can say to help me. Thanks very much indeed.

Has you mother had an enhanced MRI scan? Bilateral hearing loss is VERY rare with SSHL. Bilateral acoustic neuroma is more often the cause if hearing is lost in both ears. There is not much research being done unfortunately. It seems that the best authorities are the Massachusettes Ear and Eye hospital in USA and the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital in the UK but they do NOT know what causes SSHL or how to treat it. Your mother should try a hearing aid at least in her better ear as she may find some benefit.

JeWeL41 last decade
Laziz, your mum 's case sound quite serious and since it happened almost 1 year ago, I guess the chance to recover is slim. You should look for some hearing aids for her to help her hear if possible. If not I guess cochlear implant might suit her, of course all these u have to talk to professionals

God bless u

god2007 last decade
Jewel,
I read from the net that what she had was SSHL and also quite severe in both ears which did not response to steroid treatment and she had cochlear implant to help hearing now

god2007 last decade
god2007, yes, it seems that she had both. she is not a typical case though is she? After all how many of us have even been offered exploratory surgery? My ENT said it could do more damage than good.
